PepsiCo is one of the largest food and beverage companies in the world with more than 250,000 employees in more than 200 countries. PepsiCo is primarily known for its soft drink Pepsi Cola, but also carries a number of other well-known brands, such as 7UP, Quaker, Tropicana, Gatorade, Lay’s, Smiths and Frito-Lay.

The Task
The European PepsiCo organization wanted to bring its plants up to world-class level. It wanted to accomplish this by undertaking a number of initiatives, including the further professionalization of the Maintenance & Asset Management function within its plants.

The Approach
In cooperation with PepsiCo, Mainnovation developed a European improvement program called PEMM (PepsiCo Europe Maintenance Methodology). PEMM, which is fully based on the VDMXL methodology, is used to annually audit and benchmark each plant. The VDMXL KPIs are used for this purpose. In addition to the KPI measurement, PEMM also includes a maturity analysis that identifies the level of professionalism achieved for each competence on the basis of standardized checklists.

Mainnovation’s Added Value
Using the results of the benchmark study and the maturity analysis a Maintenance & Asset Management policy is developed each year that focuses on maximum value creation. This policy is unique for every plant, because the dominant value driver and core competences can differ by plant. This is in fact the major strength of the PEMM program. It makes use of a standardized methodology (VDMXL), but the outcome is always plant-specific.

This policy is unique for every plant, because the dominant value driver and core competences can differ by plant .
