RWE, headquartered in Essen, Germany, is one of the five largest producers of conventional and green electricity, and gas and wind energy in Europe. The overall company employs 60,000 people and provides 16 million customers with electricity and gas.

The Task
At the beginning of this century, when the energy market in Europe was liberalized, Essent Energie initiated a large-scale program to improve the performance of its assets. Mainnovation was approached to assist.

The Approach
After first improving technical availability by 5%, the focus shifted to reducing maintenance costs. The VDMXL Cost Control improvement loop, including asset-based budgeting, cost registration in the EAM system and cost monitoring using an automated VDMXL Control Panel, was used for this purpose.
The use of the Cost Control improvement loop resulted in increased cost-awareness and furthermore provided the motivation needed to continue to improve the registration of costs in the EAM system. For example, hourly rates, material prices, overhead costs, as well as the use of the right work order types were reviewed. In addition, a new meeting structure was introduced to regularly discuss the KPIs in the Control Panel and to initiate adjustment actions.

Mainnovation’s Added Value
Essent can rightly say that it has closed the entire Cost Control improvement loop. After just two years, the program has produced over € 7 million in savings, without negatively impacting the increased technical availability and safety of its assets.
