As maintenance and service company, NedTrain is responsible for the maintenance of the train fleet of the Dutch National Railways (NS). This responsibility starts with the commissioning of a new train series and ends with the decommissioning of this train series. In the 30 to 35 years in between, NedTrain assumes responsibility for the maintenance and service. The total train fleet consists of multiple series of different ages.

The Task
To get a handle on the performance of each series and to obtain insight into the annual supply of projects and maintenance activities, NedTrain approached Mainnovation.

The Approach
Mainnovation developed a blueprint for the asset management processes on the basis of VDMXL. This blueprint was used to structure the existing NedTrain processes and determine the level of professionalism of these processes. This resulted in an improvement plan in which missing processes were developed and others were improved.
A BI tool was used to develop a control panel on the basis of VDMXL KPIs. This last component represented the finishing touch to the project.

Mainnovation’s Added Value
The dominant value driver for each series is now determined at the beginning of each year on the basis of current passenger needs, the level of performance of the train series (in relation to other series within and external to NedTrain) and the business objectives of the NS Group. The strategy is monitored with the help of an elaborate KPI measurement system throughout the year. This integral project and maintenance management approach has made NedTrain one of the best performing Maintenance & Asset Management organizations in its sector.
