Sustainable Asset Management makes a difference!

The industry in North-West Europe is facing a crucial challenge: how do you increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while maintaining operational goals? Many industrial companies are already taking significant steps towards sustainability. But that is not enough. It is now up to the Maintenance & Asset Management department to make a difference.

In order to stop global warming, the European Commission set an ultimatum in 2019. This European Green Deal was a wake-up call for the industry. We must pull out all the stops to achieve these goals. It is therefore good to investigate what the technical department can do to contribute to the sustainability goals. And also how much impact these measures have.

New methodology

A project called MORE4Sustainability has been launched, on behalf of the European Union. The aim of this project is to develop a methodology with which the Maintenance & Asset Management department will contribute to the company’s sustainability goals: improving energy efficiency and reducing CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions. We call this methodology Sustainable Asset Management.
The methodology and the associated Roadmap are based on extensive benchmark research within the manufacturing industry in Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Germany. Research was conducted into a series of best practices in the field of Maintenance, Overhaul, Repair & Engineering (MORE).

Impact

The good news: Sustainable Asset Management has an impact and really contributes to improving energy efficiency and reducing GHG emissions. It pays to maintain machines well and align them properly. Applying AI can contribute to improving energy efficiency. Modern techniques help to detect leaks earlier. And there is much to be gained by installing your own solar panels or a combined heat and power system.

Roadmap

But which practices are most relevant for which company and is there a smart order when it comes to step-by-step implementation? The MORE4Sustainable Framework, final report of the research, provides answers. It contains a roadmap to be used as a practical step-by-step approach to implement Sustainable Asset Management. Attention is also paid to a self-scan and a business case calculation. Finally, inspiring case stories and benchmark results will contribute to sharing the knowledge gained about this new methodology that will undoubtedly prove its added value.

Trainings

A training program is being developed in the final phase of the project. In 2025, several classroom trainings are already planned to provide the maintenance community with tools to start working on sustainability in a targeted manner.
Trainings are provided in all four participating countries and are listed on the MORE4Sustainability project website. You can also register for a specific training via this website.
